Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSA)

Outline

By popular demand, the Wakefield Educational Psychology Service will be delivering a third cohort of the Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) training in the spring term of 2019 for TA’s, HLTAs and learning mentors. This six day course will prepare members of staff to work as ELSAs within their schools to provide support for children and young people in schools to understand and regulate their own emotions. In addition to the six days of training, the ELSAs will also receive two group supervision sessions to support them in their role.

Description

ELSA is an intervention that was developed and is supported by Educational Psychologists who apply psychological knowledge of social and emotional development to particular areas of need in order to promote the emotional wellbeing of children and young people.
The six days of ELSA training consists of the following:
  • Introduction to ELSA, target setting and emotional literacy in schools
  • Building self esteem and resilience
  • Building motivation and engagement; social skills
  • Emotional regulation; ASD
  • Loss and bereavement; the use of stories in ELSA work
  • Key skills to deliver the ELSA role; action planning with line managers

In addition to the training days, this package includes two group supervision sessions. This provides ELSAs with clinical casework supervision and the opportunity to gain ideas, resources and support from Educational Psychologists and their fellow ELSAs.

The cost of the package (six days of training and two group supervision sessions) is £550 per person.

To help you to identify members of staff appropriate for the course, it may be helpful to consider that an ELSA needs to:
  • Have a warm personality and be able to stay calm under pressure
  • Be able to gain the confidence of children who may present as being outwardly challenging or socially withdrawn
  • Be happy to work independently and show initiative
  • Be creative in planning interventions and efficient in recording ELSA work
  • Be eager to learn and develop new skills

(Upon completion of training, there is a separate supervision SLA available for purchase at £250 for half termly supervision sessions to support trained ELSAs in maintaining the necessary skills and knowledge to undertake their role. Please note that although this is an optional additional SLA, ongoing clinical supervision for ELSAs is a requirement for them to continue using the ELSA title.)
